LAWLESS SECURES PROMISE ON JOHNSTOWNBRIDGE SCHOOL TRANSPORT

James Lawless has secured a promise from Minister John Halligan that he will investigate the situation of school transport from Johnstownbridge, Kilshanroe, and the wider area to Edenderry’s St Mary’s and Oakland schools

James said, “Following the fiasco which has left many without school transport last September I have this week met the Minister to lobby on behalf of parents who had been left driving or making other arrangements to get their children to school in Edenderry. If at all possible, this must be avoided for the upcoming academic year.” Continue reading “LAWLESS SECURES PROMISE ON JOHNSTOWNBRIDGE SCHOOL TRANSPORT”

O’ROURKE SAYS HOMECARE PACKAGES SHOULD BE PART OF FAIR DEAL

Frank O’Rourke TD has said Home Care Packages should be added as an option as part of the Fair Deal Scheme

“Earlier this year, Fianna Fail introduced the Nursing Home Support Scheme (amendment Bill) 2016, which will facilitate the use of the Fair Deal Scheme model for Home Care Packages. The Bill  passed through to the second stage of the legislative process and is now scheduled to come before the Dail again in July” stated Deputy O’Rourke.

“My experience with my constituents who attend my weekly clinic in relation to care for their elderly parents or relations, is that many families are choosing care at home rather than residential care. On average, it costs three times as much to care for someone in a nursing home than in their own home.” Continue reading “O’ROURKE SAYS HOMECARE PACKAGES SHOULD BE PART OF FAIR DEAL”

O’ROURKE DEMANDS BANKS GIVE COSTOMERS RIGHT TRACKER RATE

Frank O’Rourke TD has called on banks to put Tracker mortgage customers on the correct tracker rate now.

“Thousands of mortgage customers continue to be denied the correct tracker rate to which they are contractually entitled, and I am calling on banks to put tracker mortgage customers on the correct rate now.”

“A family with a mortgage of €200,000 which is wrongly paying a variable rate of around 4% and should be paying a tracker rate of 1%, is paying about €500 every single month in interest more than it should be paying” stated Deputy O’Rourke.

“This is simple unfair both to the mortgage customer, who has much demands on their income, but also on the economy. This money could be available for increasing consumer demand and stimulating local economies.”

“I know from my colleague, Finance Spokesperson, Michael McGrath, that 11,700 mortgage customers have been either denied their tracker rate or have been charged the incorrect rate.”

“Incredibly, the Central Bank has not imposed any deadline on the banks for customers to be put on the correct tracker rate.

“The Central Bank says that banks are required to reinstate customers on to the correct rate as soon as they have been identified. This pace of progress is not acceptable. The number one priority for the Central Bank has to be to ensure that customers who are being wrongly denied a tracker rate or who are being charged the wrong tracker rate are put on the correct rate without any further delay,” concluded Deputy O’Rourke.

O’ROURKE URGES GREATER RURAL ACCESS TO BROADBAND

Frank O’Rourke TD has welcomed the publication of a recent survey by IBEC which states that nearly 80% of Kildare premises now have access to High speed broadband

However he says that gaps in broadband services in Kildare need to be addressed.

“Kildare has the second best connectivity out of the 26 counties in the country. However, we need to ensure that gaps in the service in rural areas in Kildare  are addressed.” Continue reading “O’ROURKE URGES GREATER RURAL ACCESS TO BROADBAND”

LAWLESS CALLS FOR RATIFICATION OF DISABILITIES CONVENTION

James Lawless TD has called on the Minister for Health to ratify the UN Convention of Rights for People with Disabilities

Currently Ireland is the only European country to have not ratified the convention.

“I had the pleasure of meeting a most amazing, passionate and articulate young woman last week, Niamh Herbert from Sallins, who attended the House with me to request Members of the House to advance the passing of this Bill as expeditiously as possible and, indeed, to ratify the convention. Niamh is a student in Trinity College Dublin and she represents herself, the students’ union in the college and a group called Disability and I”.
