O’ROURKE SLAMS CHILDREN’S HEALTHCARE WAITING LIST

Frank O’Rourke TD has said it is unacceptable that 3,664 children and adolescents are waiting for primary care services in Kildare and West Wicklow

He was commenting as information compiled by Fianna Fáil paints a shocking picture of 90,000 children waiting for primary care treatments across the country. New information from the HSE also shows that 117,000 children across the country are waiting for hospital treatment.

Deputy O’Rourke said the Occupational Therapy list for Kildare – West Wicklow was particularly bad with 917 children waiting, including 614 who have been waiting for more than one year for an assessment.

He said, “The primary care lists which we have refer to vital treatment which greatly aides a child’s growth and development. That there are 3,664 children waiting for psychology, audiology, ophthalmology, dietetics, speech and language therapy, occupational therapy and physiotherapy, is simply unacceptable.”

LAWLESS RAISES NAAS HOSPITAL OVERCROWDING IN THE DAIL

James Lawless raised the chronic overcrowding of Naas Hospital with the Minister for Health in the Dáil yesterday

Naas General Hospital is the most overcrowded hospital in the Eastern region, which is shocking when you consider Dublin hospitals are also in this region.

James said, “A new endoscopy unit is badly needed as procedures are currently carried out in a prefab that is cold and lacks privacy and the Lakeview psychiatric unit also needs significant investment. An upgrade of the hospital has been in the pipeline for some time now and I have asked the Minister to ensure delivery.”

O’ROURKE RAISES HOSPITAL OVERCROWDING IN THE DAIL

Frank O’Rourke TD spoke in the Dáil earlier this week on the Fianna Fáil motion on hospital overcrowding and how it affects elderly people.

“Our hospitals are at crisis point. Naas Hospital had 851 people, aged 75 or over, waiting on trolleys or chairs in the Emergency Department, since the start of the year. Delayed discharges are another problem. Proper step down facilities and Home Care supports could resolve this and I call on the Minister to provide extra resources, for both the Housing Adaptation Grant and the Home Care Package, to allow elderly people be cared for safely, and to live independently, in their own homes.”

O’ROURKE RAISES WAITING TIMES FOR SPECIAL NEEDS KIDS

Frank O’Rourke TD spoke on the unacceptable waiting times for children with special needs requirements in getting an appointment for an Assessment of Needs with the HSE.

Waiting times average 2 years and the delay in any diagnosis has a knock on effect at a critical stage in a child’s development, causing further delays in accessing essential services and supports, such as Psychology, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, and Speech and Language Therapy.
