Cllr Naoise O’Cearuil welcomes Funding for Maynooth Footbridge

A new footbridge on Mill Street Maynooth has gotten the go ahead after years of campaigning by Cllr. Naoise Ó Cearúil.

The matter was raised by the Maynooth based councillor once again at the March meeting of the Maynooth Municipal District.

Cllr. Ó Cearúil has long highlighted how the current bridge does not cater for the huge number of pedestrians crossing it every day. Commenting on the matter, he said “We have a situation where young children and all other pedestrians have had to walk on the road as there is not enough space on the footpath. I have seen first hand where women with buggies have had to walk on the road and it is not good enough and I’m afraid of any accidents happening. I’ve been looking for this footbridge for some time and I’m delighted for our town that it has gotten the go ahead”.

Kildare County Council confirmed to the councillor that they had confirmation of funding the National Transport Authority of €410,000 to proceed with Phase 5 of the Maynooth North-South Corridor. They also confirmed that a detailed design of the phase will commence in summer 2018.

Darren Smyth, General Manager of Manor Mills Shopping Centre commented that, “We have seen from the centre’s point of view that this is really needed. Not only for our shoppers but for the safety of all pedestrians in the town. Its been great to work with Naoise again on another project”.

Ó Cearúil concluded by saying, “I only received confirmation on the day of the meeting that the funding had been secured and I will continue to press for improvements for the betterment of our town”.

Cllr Naoise O’Cearuil makes announcement on Patricks Day Parade

Cllr Naoise O’Cearuil has announced that due to the disruption caused by the adverse weather, the Maynooth St Patrick’s Day Parade are still taking applications.

Naoise said, “I’m entering the final hurdle in organising this year’s parade. This is my fourth year organising it and it continues to be a challenge I enjoy.”

“Due to the weather over the past week, we are accepting late applications. Please spread the word and ensure that we have another great year at our largest annual community event.”

“If anybody is aware of anybody that would be available as stewards on the day, please PM me. We really need as many bodies as possible.”

Naoise O’Cearuil raises concerns about Noise on M4 works

Cllr Naoise O’Cearuil has received assurances from Transfer Infrastructure Ireland that noise from works on the M4 will cease shortly.

Naoise said, “I have been contacted by many residents about the noise coming from the motorway. I can confirm that these works are being carried out by Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII)”

“I have requested that the TII inform residents before any works like this in future and Mr O Neill was adamant that no more works will take place after this Friday.”

“I’m also asking the TII to provide noise reduction barriers and that sound reduction tarmacadam is laid down on the stretch of the M4 outside Maynooth.”

O’Cearuil outraged at Irish Water failure jeopardising new development

Cllr Naoise Ó Cearúil has expressed his outrage at the claim that plans by developer Cairn Homes to build 400 homes in Maynooth could be in danger due to Irish Water’s lack of supply capacity.

It has been reported at the weekend that Irish Water only has the ability to cater for 40 homes rather than the anticipated 400 in the housing scheme.

Naoise said, “This shows complete ineptitude on behalf of Irish Water and the Government.”

“Powers over water were removed from the County Councils and given to Irish Water and this shows their inability to deal with those functions.”

“We are crying out for more housing in Maynooth and the entire future development of the town, including the Ring Roads is based on these future developments. Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe needs to step in here if he is serious about the Government’s Rebuilding Ireland programme.”

The Fianna Fail politician continued, “The people of Maynooth and surrounding areas need more housing urgently and the lack of supply has increased rent levels to those on par with Dublin.”

“The situation is going from bad to worse and Irish Water needs to up it’s game in helping solve this country’s housing crisis.”

O’Cearuil outlines concerns about Harbour Field

Cllr Naoise O’Cearuil has outlined his concerns about plans for a car park in the Harbour field.

Naoise said, “There has been quite some interest around the possibility of a car park in the Harbour Field. I highlighted in the February edition of the Maynooth Newsletter my concerns with the proposal.  I also raised my concerns at the recent Maynooth MD meeting. Cllr McGinley and I were the only councillors to raise objections to the proposal.”

Naoise’s comments in the newsletter were as follows : “My biggest concern is that the Harbour Field is made any smaller. It is the most important green space we have in the town and it belongs to the people of Maynooth. While there is a need for additional parking in Maynooth, I wouldn’t like to see us impeding on one of the greatest assets we have as a town.”
